DFC BIOCHAR

DFC Biochar makes premium, ag-grade biochar from waste biomass on private forests and rangelands in the U.S. These projects generate revenue by contracting for waste biomass feedstock on large private forests and rangelands, making biochar "in the woods" with mobile pyrolyzers, and selling it in end-use markets that continue sequestering carbon, e.g., agricultural soil amendments, additive for construction materials like concrete and asphalt, or as an environmental remediation agent.

These types of end-use applications also enable the creation of carbon dioxide removal (CDR) credits certified and sold separately in voluntary and pre-compliance carbon markets. Alternatively, biocarbon derived from biochar is being used to produce steel more sustainably. While this combustible end-use doesn’t create a CDR credit, by replacing traditional coal with biocarbon, the steel production process significantly reduces the carbon emissions and dependence on fossil fuels, paving the way for a more sustainable future.

Waste biomass, from timber harvesting or forest management activities, that never makes it to the mill is a source of near-term emissions because it is typically piled and burned or left to decay in the woods. However, this woody biomass provides a highly desirable feedstock to produce premium, safe biochar and stores carbon for centuries in end-use applications such as a soil amendment.
